Navigating social relationships can be challenging for middle and high school students, especially those on the Autism Spectrum, with ADHD, or experiencing social anxiety. SociAbility is dedicated to providing these students with a supportive and inclusive environment through specialized social groups in Northbrook. Our expert-led programs focus on teaching essential social skills, emotional regulation, and mindfulness techniques to help participants build lasting friendships and thrive in social situations.

Modified PEERS® Group: Comprehensive Social Skills Training

At SociAbility, our team of professional social skills experts has dedicated over fifteen years to developing and implementing innovative social groups for children and adults. One of our most sought-after programs is the Modified PEERS® Group, a comprehensive and evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated middle and high school teenagers.

Program Overview

The Modified PEERS® Group teaches essential social skills for forming and maintaining successful friendships. Through interactive lessons, role-play demonstrations, and engaging group activities, participants learn how to effectively navigate various social situations, communicate with their peers, and develop lasting relationships.

Key Components

Our program incorporates several vital components to ensure participants receive a well-rounded social skills education:

  1. Evidence-based Curriculum: The Modified PEERS® Group utilizes concepts from a proven curriculum based on extensive research and real-world experience, ensuring participants receive the most effective social skills training possible.

  2. Small Group Setting: Participants engage in a small group environment, allowing personalized attention from our trained facilitators and fostering a supportive atmosphere where students can practice newly learned skills.

  3. Parent Involvement: It's important to acknowledge that parents play a crucial role in their child's social development. Our facilitators actively engage with parents and family members. Each week feedback is sent updating on concepts being taught in the group and how to carry over the work being done in the group to home, school, and outside activities.

  4. Progress Monitoring: Our team closely monitors each participant's progress throughout the program, providing regular feedback and adjusting the curriculum to ensure optimal results.

  5. Follow-up Support: After completing the group trimester, participants and their families can access ongoing support and resources, such as booster individual sessions with one of our therapists, to reinforce the skills learned during the program and promote continued social success, or enroll for another trimester of the social group.

Skills Taught

The Modified PEERS® Group covers a wide range of social skills, including:

  • Making and keeping friends

  • Starting and maintaining conversations

  • Reading social cues and body language

  • Handling peer conflict and rejection

  • Developing empathy and understanding others' perspectives

  • Building self-confidence and self-esteem in social situations

By participating in the Modified PEERS® Group program, teenagers learn valuable social skills and gain a greater sense of belonging and connection with their peers. Our evidence-based approach has helped countless teens develop lasting friendships and achieve tremendous social success in school and beyond.

Adapting the PEERS® Curriculum

Our clinical experience has shown that some PEERS® curriculum concepts work better when broken down more simply for our clientele. In this modified PEERS® group, there is an added emphasis on emotional regulation and mindfulness techniques. This unique approach ensures that each participant receives the personalized support they need to develop their social skills and excel in various social settings.

Together, our team of experts and SociAbility participants will create a supportive and inclusive space to help them build lasting friendships and help them thrive in social situations. Our goal is to empower and equip every one of our participants with the necessary social skills they need to be successful. We look forward to partnering with you and your family to reach this goal.
